Cleavers

Botanical Name:Galium aparine

Cleavers is a ground cover found in meadows and other wayside places in the madder or bedstraw family, including the coffee plant.

At one time, the roasted seeds of cleavers were used as a coffee alternative.

Cleavers is also called bedstraw after one of its historical uses as mattress stuffing. While the leaves and stems are eaten fresh on spring salads, dried cleavers herb is commonly tinctured, steeped as tea, or used topically.

Today, the leaves and stems of the cleaver's herb are used to brew tea or to make topical skin washes and poultices.

Common Names

Bedstraw, goose grass, goose's hair
